Blue Tengu’s Game Development Show – Season 2, Episode 35

Blue Tengu - Food Jar Celebration
In this episode of Blue Tengu’s Game Development Show, we take our giant list of artifacts the player can find and break them up into the different types of artifacts that exist, then go on to add the game rules that will only make them appear with certain conditions. There was a lot of scripting and typing, so we edited the episode down to keep it nice and short.

The final categories for the artifacts were:

  • General
  • Plains Only
  • Forest Only
  • Desert Only
  • Jungle Only
  • Snow Only
  • Volcanic Zone Only
  • Dead Zone Only
  • Daytime Only
  • Nighttime Only
  • Rare

How much voice we would want to have in the game was one running question, but looking at the artifact breakdown, we finally have our answer: Every time the player finds a monolith they hear a voice clip and see subtitles related to the character’s background, and every time the player finds a rare artifact, they hear a clip related to the background of what happened to the world.

This seems to strike a good balance, and gives the rare artifacts a stronger meaning. Collecting them all should give the player a fair picture of what happened to the world, while playing through the game and hitting all of the monoliths should give them a picture about why they exist and what is going on with the post-civilization world of Skyring.

We wanted to nail down the required lines, so we could convert them to the world’s language and record the voice this coming weekend. When Eric’s son comes back, finding quiet times for voice recording will likely prove much more difficult, so anything we can do to get the bulk of the voice recording done now will serve us well down the line.
