Blue Tengu’s Live Game Development Show – Season 2, Episode 25

Blue Tengu - Artifacts and Monoliths
Happy New Year! In this episode of Blue Tengu’s Game Development Show, we start to give the artifacts scattered across the map some meaning by giving them each a unique identity and having them point to the nearest monolith checkpoint.

Until now, artifacts have just been randomly scattered items that the player can collect; they’ve had no identities, and they’ve had no purpose. Our ultimate goal is to make the hunt for the artifacts the key motivator behind exploring the very open world of Skyring and to make them the key to understanding the game’s story. However, we first need to also add a gameplay motivation to them, which we do by having them point in the direction of the more rare monoliths that power up the player and serve as checkpoints.

There’s a fine line between making the artifacts serve as a guide to monoliths and hand-holding the player to them, so we attempt to tread that line by keeping the length of the guide lines short.

In the future, we’re going to give each of the artifacts found in the remains scattered across the landscape a story. We’re also going to attempt a few online features, with ideas like: the first player to discover an artifact gets associated with that artifacts, or players can add their own artifacts and descriptions.
